This Duke Monument Building design was created for my Architectural Engineering course at Duke (CEE 311). My design emphasizes simplicity and craftsmanship, allowing the building materials and displayed objects to take center stage. Located in a heavily wooded area of campus, the monument removes visitors from the bustle of the main quad and immerses them in the surrounding forest. The material choices, pavilion, and overall structure work in harmony to bring the monument, the displayed objects, and visitors into closer dialogue with the natural landscape of the Duke Forest. The building includes two primary exhibition spaces - one on the first floor and one on the second floor - for viewing historic Duke objects, along with two single-stall public restrooms, a large storage room, and a grand pavilion outfitted with expansive canvas sunshades.
